Custom Furniture Information

In my view, making furniture is a combination of fine craftsmanship, practicality, and artistic vision.  I believe our intention goes into our work, whatever that type of work is, and manifests in the final product.  As an artist and craftswoman, I strive to create unique pieces of functional art that we engage with daily.  Each piece has it’s own integrity derived from great care, focus, and attention to detail.  Every piece of furniture I make must be functional, durable, and aesthetically pleasing.

I create my pieces from reclaimed materials rearranged into new form to participate in our present daily life, adding to our collective story.  This cuts down on our consumption and waste and allows the energy inherent in the material from its previous life to add character and strength to the new piece.  When creating furniture or art, I let the materials of wood, steel, and iron tell their story- whether it is weathering years as the side of a barn, as a fence post, in a homestead junk yard, or elements from the earth coming together by human means to form something as amazing as steel.

My style is influenced by a combination of Shaker sensibility, the enduring graceful forms of the natural world, and the amazing wealth of creative works and expertise of crafts folk before me.

I use traditional joinery techniques of early craftsmen that have endured through generations.  I build pieces out of solid wood using traditional woodworking joinery techniques because it is durable, aesthetically pleasing, and ensures the longevity I require from a piece of furniture I make.

I work with all the factors—the material, the elements, time, history, the client’s vision and desires—rather than against them.  These materials have much to teach us and my job is to listen to them, heed their story, and bring this voice of history to life.  Wood moves and fluctuates as atmospheric conditions change—it swells and shrinks as temperature and humidity levels change seasonally.   My pieces are built to allow wood’s natural movement, ensuring a piece that will last generations.

In working with clients, I use a collaborative approach in which we bring all our experiences and talents to the table to develop a piece you want to live with for generations.  I listen to what you want first, then design something that takes the whole picture into account.  Every piece must be functional, durable and aesthetically pleasing.

Prices:

Prices vary with different elements: cost of materials, size of piece, number of accoutrements (such as shelves, drawers, etc), required design work.  I price each piece accordingly.  Keep in mind that by choosing a quality craftswoman to make this piece of furniture, you are receiving a truly hand-crafted, original, custom piece for your home or office.   You can be sure that much time, energy, attention to detail and care went into your piece and that energy is evident in the end result.  Don’t be shy about inquires.

Thank you for considering my business.  I look forward to working with you!

Sincerely,

Meg Thompson
